Rusty Pink Autumn // New surface pattern designs available for fabric & art licensing

Fall must be my fave time of the year. It is filled with small rituals and as an autumn child this colorful season is my personal fave. When you realize the last rays of sun have to be soaked up fully. You go for walks in the forest to see the leaves turn into bright autumn colors and feed yourself with inspiration and at the same time calm the mind.

The forest is filled with inspiration: acorns, chestnuts, berries, toadstools and leaves in all shapes and sizes. I love the autumn lights, harsh and bright, waking me up in the morning. Autumn, I love it. And it’s my fave time of the year to create new print designs. Inspired by more earthy tones. Every year around this time I create new designs for the autumn season and an exclusive presentation is sent out to our customers who have the first pick when it comes to licensing exclusive designs. But we also look at some old prints and turn them into autumn versions: we add new colors and new scales to our Spoonflower shop, create some cool new palettes.

This year we create the Rusty Pink collection. With typical woodland, wild life and forest themes but also some more on trend prints like the Llama design featured here. And this fall animal prints; leopards and panther designs are it. So we added some of those too. Combined with our abstract designs they make a very nice broad collection to create home decor, fashion pieces for your little ones but also some on trend items for your own more mature wardrobe. So much to choose from! Take a look into our Spoonflower shop and let us know what you think of this new palette.

Designs featured here are available for licensing and on fabric and wallpaper in our Spoonflower shop. Click on the titels to get redirected to our Spoonflower shop.

New Work // Halloween fabric collection

Fright night is coming! And we are preparing for a night filled with spook and yikes! We just had to add another batch of designs for this year's halloween. We added a series of skulls for both boys and girls. Some geometric halloween animals that are just to die for. Super cute as I may say to myself...

and of course some witches, vampires and scary shizzle is now up in our Spoonflower shop. If you would like to license some of these prints for your business just reach out and send us a quick message. Traditionally October 31 is the day to remember the dead. But nowadays it is a time to dress up and have fun. And we love to see what our fabric customers are creating this year. Fun pumpkin leggings, black cat dresses. We've seen some cool pupkin dog accessories pop up. So many cute creations made with our Little Smilemakers Spoonflower fabric.

And even though this holiday has turned into this crazy dress up party world wide, it is also a day to remember those that passed. Enjoy this joyful holiday, celebrate and remember the life of those whom have passed and left a mark in your life or have influenced your being. Happy Halloween!

New collab // Wildflowers Clothing // Colorful bohemian girls fashion // Fall 2017 collection

Early this year Samantha reached out to license some of our prints for her new Wildflowers collection. This September our Sew Happy print is released and their new fall collection was launched. We love how her colorful bohemian style is a great mix and match of patterns and just wanted to share some of the new items in her collection.

For the new collection she selected two of our designs. And one of these two hold a special place for Sam and has a fun back story. And as you might know we love to tell stories. It was inspired by this place Denise and Sam used to work together, late at night and early in the morning. It was when they knew they’d be alone, left to our devices. They could design in silence or laugh their butts off from the nonsense earlier in the day. They could fight over ‘the good scissors and hide bolts of fabric from each other – because they HAD to use it first. They would build little “maps” of designs to show the local seamstress where each print should be sewn.

While they never really sewed together, they spent a lot of time with all the elements that create a piece of clothing. From the first time Sam held “the good scissors,” she knew she had to be a part of the process of making clothes—in any capacity. And when she saw our Little Smilemakers, she knew it had to be a part of her first collection. And we are so happy to be part of this process.

“For months, each style has been dressed on mannequins, pinned and trimmed until the fit is just right – and at the photoshoot all that hard work pays off. Seeing that first twirl, jump, or skip across a field is like crossing the finish line to me.”

The print is a reminder of where Sam came from, where she truly learned to mix and match colors, playfully add trims and buttons that never really seemed to go together; to create something original and so pleasing to the eye. A reminder of those long mornings and late nights the seamstress print on the Sew Happy Top is a special piece of our Wildflowers story. if you are curious about the rest of this new girls collection take a look at their website. if you purchase a Wildflower item you also support Seeds of Hope. By supporting their Education fund, you will be able to empower children all over the world with the educational tools they need to end the vicious cycle of poverty and rise above their deplorable living conditions. A great thing to support!

Fall fabric Hot Sellers // Spoonflower

As a country girl I used to play outside a lot and enjoy the change of seasons. From lush green leaves to bright red, orange and yellow. I enjoyed playing out in the windy fall weather. Hiding out in a big pile of crisp leaves, dancing in a puddle of mud. I loved playing outside, see birds build their nests and take care of their little ones. Me and my bestie took long hikes to spot little animals. Rabbits, owls and an occasional fox. And after the summer we would wear our rain boots to walk through the cornfields to see crops grow.

These little parts of my childhood are a great source of inspiration. The little girl hiking in her own Alice in Wonderland fantasy land, where oak trees came alive and little birds would turn into dinosaurs, well everything could turn into a dinosaur or a unicorn of course, those happy moments still inspire me creating seasonal designs.

Fall might just be my favorite season. It is all about starting new things and a time to reflect. Stay in, find your way around the house again and maybe improve small things to make it feel like home again. I noticed the past few weeks a lot of DIY fans have started their new projects. Sales are up and it is time to make some new warm fashion items and fun home decor textiles to spice up the interior. A great way to start this colder season.

We have seen an increase in lighter and gender neutral color schemes. And this season we have more halloween and winter sales. We are all ready to look ahead and show you the latest trends at Spoonflower. Fun fabric for the colder season. This is our top 5 hot sellers this fall.

1 // Pastel Feathers
No matter what season, our feathers keep selling. The pastels and the black color scheme form a light crisp contrast to the background. This 2-directional repeat has been very popular for baby and toddler fashion items but also very suitable for home decor. This soft design has little Aztec detailing and small arrows. Our most popular color combo still is a hotseller.

2 // Hedgehogs
We adore hedgehogs. Those adorable animals that are so damn hard to cuddle with. So we made some designs for our fabric range so you can cuddle! We have several different color schemes but this year we see an increase in gender neutrals. The black and whites with a hint of color are trending.

3 // Indian Animals
We love to see this print being picked up. For an exclusive range we designed some indian animals that were never licensed so we put them up on Spoonflower a while ago and didn’t see many sales then, but obviously the print is crazy popular this year. Happy to see this design picked up by so many enthusiastic crafters, it is one of our faves this year as well.

4 // Textured Pumpkins
In Holland we don’t have much of a ‘pumpkin’ culture. My first taste of pumpkin was in the States when I was 16 i travelled to Atlanta where my host made me a pumpkin pie. Loved it! It was early October and the US was preparing for halloween. Shops were all orange and I got to see a little of the halloween madness. This year we have seen an increase in halloween themed sales. But the pumpkin is by far our most popular one since it it also cute for fall in general. Oh, and I loved the pumpkin pie. Still hooked!

5 // Geometric Polar Bears
For the second year in a row the polar bears a very popular theme in the shop and we notice lot’s of people are already ordering winter fabric for their new range of clothes. This gender neutral Bears have been very popular the past year but the trend is still growing. Happy to see these white babies get so much love out there!

Back to school // typography designs // special designs for your little ones first day of school

Did you guys know that during my studies I also attended typography classes, where we studied fonts, typographers and got calligraphy lessons? I was studying graphic design & typography on the Royal Art Academy of The hague. Not that it was such a dread, I was a little typophile back in those days i loved smart typography and walking by a Comic Sans sign seriously gave me the chills. It still does! It is that irrational love for typography that get’s me personally offended.

I have written an entire essay about Saul Bass and his typographical movie intro’s, but also about Dutch typographers; about Wim Crouwel, founder of this countries largest graphic design firm. About Piet Zwart and his work for the national postal service. And of course Willem Sandberg, part of the Cobra movement, with his gorgeous print designs. But after my studies I only use all this for simple every day typography tasks we graphic designers do every day, spacing characters on business cards and maybe we get to draw a font for some branding every now and then but that’s about it for me.

So with all this I thought creating a typography inspired theme for our back to school post this year would be fun. Since I create surface patterns I have made several type prints. They never really are hot sellers but our most recent designs, our black and whites and hand drawn designs have been selling pretty well. So here you can see some of the black and whites themes that might be perfect for your back to school gear. Go check out the entire fabric collection on Spoonflower and make some cool back to school fashion for your little ones first day of school.

All designs featured in this post can be found in our Spoonflower online fabric shop where we offer our designs on 16 different textiles and wallpaper. If you have trouble choosing the right fabric for your project check out our Spoonflower frequently asked questions post. And reach out if you need another scale for your project, we are happy to add an extra scale to the shop for you. If you would like to license one of the designs for your business, please send us an email.

Splash About // New outdoor collection for kids // Raincoats, capes and stomp suits // Rainy day fashion

When I was a little girl I grew up in a little town in Holland. And as good Dutch parents teach you; we go anywhere on our bike no matter what kind of weather. I loved the bike trips me and my friend made during our summer break. We would cycle around for hours and hours until we got thirsty. The warm breeze, the lush country side. It is a great place to grow up, a place where you can let your kids play within a 10km radius, carefree. It was safe and easy. But then fall came, with it's crazy stormy days, bright lights and of course the cold rain.

Every Dutch kid has been brought up to go through whatever weather, on a bike. I have been wearing raincoats and... yes pants too for as long as I can remember. I never liked those sad colored things though, since they only came in sad gray, dark blue and black colors. Oh yes, and there was a great pink, I call the 80's shade. But my mum was too much of a feminine to let me have a pink raincoat. You can imagine how excited I got when I got to make a new outdoors collection (25 years later). Finally we were able to make this wet rainy world a little better, at least during stormy weather, rain and of course snow. Yes, we cycle through snow… We can do anything on a bike. Carry extra people, moving house. So this collection is very welcome.

Splash About makes wetsuits, baby and toddles swimsuits and lot's more water-related fashion for kids. Their swimwear protects little ones from nasty sun burns but now they have also launched a outdoor range. For this collection of raincoats stomp suits and capes we have made a cute girls and boys print. Some cool quirky dinosaurs and colorful Russian dolls.

Take a look into the Splash About webshop and check out our new designs. It will only take a matter of time before we will stumble upon one of these during a rainy day here in Holland. They sure bright up a gray fall and winter day!

New fall fabric // Hot Sellers // Spoonflower

As a country girl I used to play outside a lot and enjoy the change of season.

I noticed the past few weeks a lot of DIY fans have started their new projects. Sales are up and it is time to make some new warm fashion items and fun home decor textiles to lift up the interior. A great way to start this colder season. We are all ready to look ahead and show you the latest trends at Spoonflower. Fun fabric for the colder season.

1 // Pastel Feathers
The pastels and the black color scheme form a light crisp contrast to the background. This 2-directional repeat has been very popular for baby and toddler fashion items but also very suitable for home decor. This soft design has little Aztec detailing and small arrows.

2 // Geometric fox
Geometric designs still are trending. For this design I tried to combine both fall and fashion. The design has been added to the Spoonflower shop just two weeks ago but already a hot seller. Looking forward to seeing all finished projects made with this woodland theme.

3 // Pine trees
Never expected this print to be picked up like mad. But I am happy to say this pine tree design made the top sellers too. If you are looking for a clean Scandinavian style winter design this is all you need. A simple repeat in black and white with little pops of color.

4 // geometric Woodland
This must be my favorite design on fabric this season. A mix of woodland animals and geometric details in soft powder tones. This designs has been used for kids fashion but is also very popular for winter and Christmas decoration. This print is also available in black, white and gray.

Want to purchase one of these designs or check out all other themes? Take a look at the Little Smilemakers shop at Spoonflower. There are over more than 600 designs to choose from. And of course, don't forget to show your finished projects and leave a comment.

Sources of inspiration: Botanics and Wild life - All about green

I have to admit I do not only draw all day. Half of my work is researching markets all over the world. Doing so I get inspired most by what is happening in Brazil and other tropical markets right now. I am a big fan of the minimal Scandinavian designs but I adore the lush green tropical influences finally coming our way in mainstream fashion and home decor. Much more character!

So why not have a little feature about fascinates me most: Nature. I grew up in a place where we forget how to live in harmony with trees and whenever I travel I find myself a little more at ease when I am surrounded by nature. Culture fascinates me, but come on, the diversity in wild life and plants.

There is of course a serious green trend going on in every aspect of life for a while now. People get more conscious about their health, their environment and about what they eat.

Last year tropical prints were already introduced into the western fashion world. The pineapple made a come back, cactus themes and large green leafs. And with this year's spring entering the country there is finally room for plants. There is a trend going on in home decor as well. Lush branches, large retro plants decorate the living room again and colors of the tropics find their way into our interiors again. Even on minimal markets like in Scandinavia and central Europe. So yes, nature is back and we love it!

Hello October // Colorful transition time

Hello October! My favorite time of the year. When leaves change color and a renewed buzzing energy fills up the working days. When temperature drops but we still pretend there is nothing wrong with getting a drink on a terrace, just stretching summer and enjoy every second of what's left of the warmth. October is a month of transitioning. Letting go & preparing for what is to come and don't forget: make room for new things.

Many things are happening! This fall the new Veritas collection will be launched. The fall winter collection contains new bags, scarfs, cosy home wear and lot's of new fun accessories. After the very successful collection last year I was asked to make an entire collection of prints. Can not wait to see it in the shops.

This past summer has been a crazy hectic one where we welcomed a few new customers from the UK, Poland, South Africa and Australia. Now we are approaching winter most projects get finalized. Hopefully the new finished products will be launched shortly. We have been working on some nursery collections, a new fabric range and cute little shoes for toddlers. It always takes a while before the prints are finished and the finished products are ready. Can not wait to see it all! Of course it will be up here too.

And of course. With every new season there are new designs in the Spoonflower fabric shop. New winter 14/15 prints are up. Make sure to order in time for christmas and skip the holiday rush!

Back to school // Time to start new crafty projects

It's that time of the year again. The weather is changing, the days are getting shorter and new things
are happening. I love this time of the year. When it feels good to stay in and watch a movie and you don't
feel like missing out on anything.

It is time to go back to work, or back to school for the little ones. My vacation is yet to come so I still have something to look forward to. This summer has been unusually busy so for me, my summer is postponed till September I guess. But with all new projects starting up that might be wishful thinking! So much to do! Since it is 'back to school' time I have been adding new fall and winter themes to the Spoonflower shop. I also have been working on some NYE themes and christmas prints already. So if you feel like starting new crafty projects take a look!

One year of animal illustrations // Woodland Fall // Winter Wonderland // Indian Jungle and Brazil Paradise

July was a month filled with great new projects. One of these projects was for my former internship collegue. Ten years after my internship at Rotterdamse Schouwburg he contacted me to work on this great new series of illustrations for UITagenda Rotterdam. A cultural magazine that also includes a kids culture agenda. I was asked to design a new series of designs for the children's section of the magazine. These four patterns are a little preview for what is coming. This upcoming cultural season kicks off with a cute woodland fall theme. But I was also asked to make a design for the magazine cover. Looking forward to see all designs in printing.

> Happy october! Nesting time of the year. Some home deco, retro fabric and inspiration for you!

By Maaike Boot

Well, it is october! The summer really is gone, the leafs are changing color and the days are getting darker. I love this time of the year. I love to prepare my house into a nice warm place to hide from the cold winter days. Fall is all about the change in color, change in mood, nesting, that change always is a good inspiration for me. Like a new fresh start, turning a page.

I have been working on several home deco projects for the past few months. Like the Animal Patchwork storage boxes. All six boxes all have their own animal theme. Cute abstract illustrations for both boys and girls. A cute colorful touch for your kids bedroom.

But i have also created a new fabric line at Spoonflower For all DIY people that spend this time of the year sewing new accessories for their homes this might be a nice place to purchase my, if i say so, very cool retro designs. Spoonflower has different types of fabric material so you can purchase my design on every type that suits your do it yourself product. Have fun browsing through the store, like, share and tell your crafty creative friends! Have a nice colorful october ya'll!
