3 Must-Reads for starting up your design business

This month it will be three years ago since I started Little Smilemakers Studio. I have studies and read numerous books and magazines to stay up to date about social media and making my living doing what I love. There are three books that have helped me with the little bugs and errors that come with setting up your own independent creative business. I was lucky to have had 7 years of experience before starting my company so I already had a clear view of what I wanted and especially what I didn't want. But there is no way to oversee it all. There three books have been a great addition.

1 // Mollie Makes Blogging
This is not a book but a magazine all about blogging, social media and how to deal with creative content online. The magazine has great tips for transforming your blog and website into a great visual experience for followers, simple tools to keep in mind while posting content and it has a great overview of all social media pro's and con's. Find out what works best for you and build your creative blog with a steady foundation.



2 // Handboek voor het opzetten van een ontwerp praktijk
I already bought this book before starting my own business. It is a good preparation for what is to come when you do not have a lot of experience in design practice. This book contains all practicalities you will have to worry about while setting up a new business. How to attract clients and how to deal with contracts and numbers. The guide to start your own design business. The book is only available in Dutch.

3 // Art Inc
A guide for building your career as an artist and was written by Lisa Congdon, created by her own experience as an artist. This book is all about turning your skills into a successful business. The book has some great tips about dealing with irregular income, protecting copyright and you can also learn about promoting your artwork, work with creative galleries and selling your art.

Cultural season kick off | Cover design & illustrations // Uitagenda Rotterdams Uitburo // Stof Rotterdam

During my internship I was lucky enough to work as a graphic designer for Rotterdamse Schouwburg. Now, almost 10 years later, I collaborated with Albert (my former mentor during my internship) again. Meanwhile he set up his own design agency; Stof Rotterdam in Rotterdam and this time we worked together for Rotterdam's Uitagenda and this is the result. I was asked to make the Magazine's cover for this years start of the cultural season and a series of colorful kids illustrations for the Children's Agenda insert. I am a great fan of live performances, theater and music and I realized, while working on this project, I miss that creative energy going around, working in this creative energetic environment. Uitburo Rotterdam has also published a short interview on their website which you can read here. All in Dutch! Sorry guys.

So I am very happy I will be back working for performance theater this upcoming year too. I am part of a team working for Stills. A performance written by Caroline Rottier that will be part of the Art Brut project during Mons 2015, Cultural Capital of Europe 2015.

One year of animal illustrations // Woodland Fall // Winter Wonderland // Indian Jungle and Brazil Paradise

July was a month filled with great new projects. One of these projects was for my former internship collegue. Ten years after my internship at Rotterdamse Schouwburg he contacted me to work on this great new series of illustrations for UITagenda Rotterdam. A cultural magazine that also includes a kids culture agenda. I was asked to design a new series of designs for the children's section of the magazine. These four patterns are a little preview for what is coming. This upcoming cultural season kicks off with a cute woodland fall theme. But I was also asked to make a design for the magazine cover. Looking forward to see all designs in printing.

> Yoga & Meditation | Poster design

As a graphic designer exercise is important to keep your body balanced. I love yoga and try do meditate one in a while. But it is hard to do at home. There is always something that keeps you from the things you really need so i started yoga lessons a few years ago. And i am hooked! Designing a yoga and meditation poster was a good way to keep me focused on that balance again.

All new back to school stationary diaries and back to school related products are just in stores but i am already making new designs for next years back to school teenagers. Starting with a brand new water color illustrated diary cover for Girlz! magazine Holland. I love the new pastel wave in graphic land. It is going to be awesome!

De nieuwe editie is alweer richting de drukker maar hondenleven is voor een nieuwe rubriek nog steeds op zoek naar foto's waar jij en de hond van je jeugd op staan. Heb jij een leuke retro foto van jezelf met je oude viervoeter stuur deze dan op naar het blad! Hondenleven nummer 8 ligt nu in de winkel! Bomvol fijne verhalen en tips voor en over jouw viervoeter. In dit nummer staat ook een artikel over Martin Gaus en zijn hondenleven. Het is weer een mooi nummer geworden.

Niet alleen deze stapel Hondenleven Magazines maar nog een hele berg meer zijn afgelopen jaar afgeleverd. Volgend jaar alweer de vijfde jaargang! Met een dikke kop koffie zijn we nu het allereerste nummer voor 2011 aan het afmaken. De pagina's zitten al grotendeels in elkaar. Dit nummer wordt een lekker-thuis-op-de-bank nummer met een hoop crea-doe-dingen en leuke online shop adresjes. Natuurlijk valt het ook weer het een en ander te winnen. Vanaf eind 15 december ligt hij alweer in de winkel. Net op tijd om de donkerste dagen mee door te komen! Enjoy!

> Hondenleven dubbeldik nieuwjaarsnummer!

Het dubbeldikke winternummer ligt vanaf 15 december in de winkel!
Een klein voorproefje van het nieuwe Hondenleven Magazine. Om de koude dagen door te komen hebben we een dubbeldik winternummer gemaakt met een hoop leuke doe-dingetjes om lekker bezig te zijn binnenshuis. Zo hebben we in dit nummer een fijne puzzel, een winterwoordzoeker om mee op de bank te kruipen. En een bomvolle pagina met websites waarop je al je creativiteit kunt loslaten. Natuurlijk valt er weer een hele berg leuke gadgets te winnen voor je viervoeter. Maar wat ook zeker de moeite waard is zijn onze nieuwe winter-fotoreportages. De husky's gaan weer de sneeuw in!
