Announcement for Shutterstock buyers // License designs // Contact our studio directly

Some of you have noticed already: We are no longer licensing our designs via Shutterstock. Due to a crazy sh*tload of misuse, and no proper sollution to prevent this in the future, we decided our designs were not getting protected as they should and we decided to delete our collection. We are very sorry for all you buyers it had to come this far since we worked with Shutterstock for almost 10 years, but things got.... unworkable.

We have removed our all our designs and we are working on a new library of non-exclusive artwork. You can now only license our designs by contacting us directly. If you would like to receive a link to view our online portfolio just send us an email and we are happy to send you a link to our work. We are still in the process of adding all designs to this library, not our entire collection has been uploaded yet but we are working on it! It will take a little while before all 5000+ designs are all up, processed and tagged. Please have some patience!

Legal Matters // License information Little Smilemakers Studio fabric & designs

We are honored that so many companies would like to have Little Smilemakers designs in there shop. We have licensed our designs all over the world. However, there are lots of companies not having the proper license to sell our work and it is starting to be a full time task to investigate and monitoring these matters.

Licensing art for your business
We have been licensing our designs both exclusive and non-exclusively. If you are selling fabric and would like to add our designs to the shop contact us directly. We opt out the enhanced license through Shutterstock since there is too much mis-use. If you would like to start selling our prints just contact our studio directly and we will be happy to guide you through the licensing process.

Legal steps
For all of you selling without a license you can still reach out to us and purchase a license up till May 1th. As of next month we will be taking legal steps toward companies who are selling our designs illegally. If you stumble upon our designs and if you are unsure the fabric is legit just contact us and we can help you further.

License & Spoonflower
And if you are selling our designs with Spoonflower fabric: no worries! Royalties are included in the price so you don't need an extra license to sell your products with our prints on them. Spoonflower has a great royalty structure, you might pay a little more but artist benefit from each and every purchase directly. We love to see all those finished products and would like to thank our Spoonflower customers for their support. You make our work pretty damn awesome!

If you want to make sure to buy original designs check if your reseller is registered on our client list on the Little Smilemakers Studio website. If you purchase through one of our customers you are allowed to use the fabrics for small businesses and other commercial use.

Announcement for our Shutterstock customers // Enhanced Commercial license only available directly

Almost 10 years ago I joined Shutterstock as a contributor. Starting out with a few abstract and urban photographs and textures but soon changed into uploading vectors: illustrations and pattern designs only. A lot has changed in print. Things have gotten more digital and the demand for designs for commercial purpose grew.

Our Shutterstock portfolio has been a great way to showcase our designs and we still upload some artwork every now and then. It has been a great way to built up a steady business, generate a base income and exposure.

The past year a lot of things have changed in the enhanced license agreement. Our designs are usually made from vector. So it is easy for customers to edit and change colors and adjust the prints to use them for their products. Which we love. But it also means it is easy to download the files without the right license and have a high quality file without paying the proper fee. Unfortunately that happened a lot.

Misuse of designs
As our business and also online vector portfolio has grown bigger we noticed an increase in misuse of our designs and since we have to protect our creations we decided that from April 1st we stop selling enhanced licenses over Shutterstock, at least for now. It does not mean our designs are no longer available, we just would like to do direct business when it comes to licensing our designs for commercial use, so we know every print we find out there is licensed in a legit way.

After some consideration we decided to opt out our enhanced license downloads via Shutterstock. But our entire portfolio is still available for commercial usage too. Just contact our studio directly and we will help you further.

Newbee in licensing?
If you are new in licensing designs we are also happy to give you more info about our standard and commercial licenses. We also have in-house expertise to guide your business through the process of production, can adjust colors, scales and detailing and of course with our 10 year experience we are on top of the trends. So don't hesitate and send us a message.

Sources of inspiration: Berlin // treasure hunting // top 5 places to visit // Romantic decay & hidden gems

It has been a long time since I have been to Berlin so when I knew the Bread & Butter show was coming up I planned a trip to one of my all time fave cities. I guess what attracted me most, when I visit Berlin 10 years ago, was the calm and relaxed atmosphere. The city itself did not have a booming economy and lot's of creatives settled here and it was still easy to find a cheap place to live.

But a lot has changed. Since Berlin was featured in the New York Times as one of the 'go to' places the city now has a crazy amount of tourist flushing the streets during the warmer season. Even though locals might not be too happy about it and prices have gone up like crazy, they have to admit: this new cash flow was very welcome.

Romantic decay
During summer 6 years ago was the last time i visit this city before going back this summer and I can see so much has changed. The damaged old buildings have been renovated and covered in a layer of fresh new paint. New modern architecture is popping up around the eastern part of town and near the Spree river. And I am quite happy to only have seen one junkie shooting up during my trip. That is a little progress right?

Berlin always has been a melting pot and the city has a complex history which is very visible to the eye up until today. So what is it that makes this city unique? The way it bounces back from everything that has happened? Berlin is in fact very different from other cities in Germany that I visit and this raw creative energy is very much part of it. Hopefully some of it will stay.

Bread & Butter
So this year I decided to join the Bread and Butter show where fashion start ups and shops find there annual dose of inspiration. Where buyers collect new items for their shop and designers present their new work. It is always fun to see what is happening in fashion and print. What influences new collections. The Bread and Butter show location is an experience by itself: the old Tempelhof airport building, that was open for public up until 2008, is a beautiful piece of architecture. After a brief meeting I was able to have a good look around and enjoy the beautiful and hot summer day out in the sun, overlooking the old airport.

Berlin, It never ceases to amaze me. The city has a raw urban edge but is also a great place to visit with small kids since parks and playgrounds are everywhere. So of course with every trip I stumble upon places I really love and I am happy to write down a few of the Berlin gems I discovered while cycling around town on my bike. So here is a top 5 of places to see and experience.

1 // Blain Southern
This contemporary art gallery is located in the old press building and offers a huge canvas to artists. This summer the gallery has an impressive exhibit of Morellet. You can see his paintings and also his later work: neon installations. His work was influenced by artists like Piet Mondriaan and Max Bill. You can see some similarities in the movement and the composition but using materials like neon, concrete, metal, and leaving out color were considered to be quite modern back then and still make his work very unique. What I love about the gallery itself is that it has a huge main area with one high sealing stretching up into the sky. The canvas for the work makes the art even more astonishing.

2 // Café Strauss
This time I was renting a small studio near the Bergmannstraße in Kreuzberg. A perfect location to visit the Bread and Butter show that was held at the old Tempelhof airport. This area has lot's of restaurants and bars but if you want to have a sweet break or little brunch I would recommend Café Strauss that is a little further west and located on a graveyard. Does not sound too appealing right? Sit down and eat with the dead? Well, it is an experience to have a bite here. The place itself has great baked goods, heavenly cheesecake, but you can also eat the more traditional pretzel and butter. Try it out!

3 // Neue Heimat
Most people visit the East Side Gallery when they visit Berlin. These remains of the wall that once divided east and west is one of the cities main attractions. But there is lot's more to see and to do around the eastern part. If you walk a little more north you can visit a small reggae place with food and drinks and art exhibits: YAAM. But one of the places that for me is a typical Berlin experience is the Sunday flea market down Revaler Straße. Neue Heimat. This area remains a little shady but on sundays the old factories east of the train tracks houses a vivid vintage and flea market. You can enjoy some street food, have a drink and enjoy live music in typical Berlin style. During the night this place turns into a club. So if you're up for a night out check out what's going on via their website.

4 // Schee
I am a big fan of one German shop in particular: Kauf Dich Glücklich. And while visiting this fave of mine I found this little gem next door: Schee. A place where you can find small home decor items and a great collection of graphic prints. Seriously great! If you can appreciate illustration, photography, typography and design; this shop has it all. You can buy an original screen print for under €50. So go take a look, and even if you are not looking for anything to spice up your wall, it is a great place for some colorful inspiration.

5 // Kauf Dich Glücklich
Just so you know, I am not a big fan of shopping. But this place has it all for me. The shop has locations all over Germany so I always make sure to have a little peek before I leave for home. They have some Scandinavian fashion labels and also have jewelry, shoes, bags and book. Great books about travel and art. Boy that is one awesome mix of books! I know! So if you get a chance to visit Germany, check out the nearest KDG shop and buy yourself some happiness.

Back to school // Time to start new crafty projects

It's that time of the year again. The weather is changing, the days are getting shorter and new things
are happening. I love this time of the year. When it feels good to stay in and watch a movie and you don't
feel like missing out on anything.

It is time to go back to work, or back to school for the little ones. My vacation is yet to come so I still have something to look forward to. This summer has been unusually busy so for me, my summer is postponed till September I guess. But with all new projects starting up that might be wishful thinking! So much to do! Since it is 'back to school' time I have been adding new fall and winter themes to the Spoonflower shop. I also have been working on some NYE themes and christmas prints already. So if you feel like starting new crafty projects take a look!

Shutterstock Contributors Drink & Draw Rotterdam

A few months ago I was asked to set up a contributors meeting for all Shutterstock Illustrator Contributors. Lot's of create people work by themselves from their home office so this was a nice chance to get some traction from outside of this usual working space. Meet colleagues, chat about work, illustrations and design and hopefully inspire others to also come and join.

Over 40 people showed up on our first Drink & Draw and to give contributors some more insight about the company they have been working for, Gerd had prepared a small presentation. About the company, how it all started, their vision and some information about latest trends.

It was such fun meeting contributors from all parts of the country. One of them told me she was so happy to finally meet other Shuterstock contributors. She had never met any other illustrators before our meet-up. And I understand how nice it can be to get to know others in the business. Learning form each other is so important. If you don't read the blog or forum, working in stock can be lonely, working from your home studio. But I think this is a great first step to get to know each other, people with same interests exchanging experiences and tips.

Hopefully we can do another Drink & Draw soon and keep this great energy alive.

I was amazed by all the positive responds, fun chat's and great feedback. Hopefully we can do another Drink & Draw soon and keep this great energy alive. And I hope to have more time to talk to each of you and to know all of you. Thank you Shutterstock (tnx Jennifer!) for letting this great event happen and a big thanks to Gerd for his presentation and 'props' and the Lungo Rotterdam staff for their great help.

Shutterstock Instagram Takeover // Behind the scenes at the studio & a great dose of inspiration

Instagram must be my favorite type of social media. I am not a great writer, I a visual person. So when I was asked to take over Shutterstock's instagram feed for a week I was more that happy to do so.

Posting for someone else is a completely different experience. Shutterstock followers tend to choose Photography over illustration. So this was a great chance to post some more visual work made with different materials. Show followers how I work and what inspires me. But of course this take-over was also a great chance to show a little bit about my country and the places I visit, little snaps of my daily life. I love to travel but forget there is also a lot to see right where I come from. Especially for followers from so many countries around the world.

I was amazed with the great feedback I got. I am so happy I was able to show off a bit more illustrations and patterns. If you want to see all images take a look at the Shutterstock Instagram feed. And don't forget to follow @littlesmilemakers too.

If you would like to read more about my take-over you can check Shutterstock's blogpost written by the awesome Sarah Maloy. Thank you for this great story.

Little Smilemakers illustrations and patterns are available at Shutterstock for 7 years already. And after winning the Grant Jury Prize with a short Artist 'behind the scenes' for Shutterstock Stories last fall, it was about time to visit the new Shutterstock office. So this week the Little Smilemakers Studio moved into a little loft in SoHo. We'll be hanging out the Empire State Building to catch up with some peeps in the brand new Shutterstock office. Did you know they have an Alice in Wonderland room? Not a bad place to get creative!

> And the winner is.....

It was something I had never done before. Making a 'moving' image about... well, me. I am not the kind of person that feels naturally comfortable in front of a camera. If I know someone is trying to capture me through a lens I suddenly feel the urge to do all sorts of things but not be in it, sit still, or try to go with it. So yes. After a week of filming, me and my craziness, I decided to do what I love most. Make a video of my story illustration style. I finished just in time and sent in my Shutterstock Stories video.

Now a month later all winners are announced and I have this very cool 'badge in my right corner' thing going on. I am honored to be one of the winners. All Shutterstock Stories have been very inspiring. Proud to bee one of them! So thank you all for voting and supporting me these past few weeks. And I will have to thank two peeps i couldn't finish this without: Jaap Vork for his amazing eye and Rob Kanters for his soundscape and greatness of his ears.

Enjoy watching if you haven't seen the video yet and follow all new exciting things happening on facebook.

I have been working on a video last month about my creative story for the Shutterstock Stories program. I am so excited I am selected as one of the finalists. There are so many interesting, funny and also moving stories behind the artist, the Shutterstock contributers. It is lovely to see how people from all over the world join a creative community like Shutterstock. So many possibilities come with being an artist for them. Check all video's. They are very inspirational. If you would like to support me in the race please watch my Little Smilemakers video and vote!

> Amsterdam Holland doodle pattern | on fabric & wallpaper

If I am a typical Dutch designer is for you to decide. Maybe the clean shapes and white background is typically Dutch. I am not sure. I let myself get inspired by the world and even though I am located in The Hague, Holland, most of my artwork is about my trips and travels around the world. After getting many requests ('please, make more Dutch designs') I decided it was about time to dedicate some time to creating something typically Dutch. Hopefully you will enjoy these Bicycle and Amsterdam designs.

> Wild life illustration series | inspired by National Parks and travels world wide

One of my biggest passions is travel. I love to see things I have never seen before and I adore different cultures and countries. My work is highly inspired by my travels. This summer I have traveled through Asia. Visiting National Parks in India, Indonesia and Nepal inspired me to do a series of wild life illustrations.

These screen print illustrations are available on fabric and wallpaper at the Spoonflower shop, uploaded to the Shutterstock portfolio and added to the list of prints, tank tops, tote bags, laptop covers and iphone cases (for new iPhone5S and iphone5C cases as well) Society6 shop. So hopefully you will enjoy my little pieces of travel as well.

> Shutterstock Stories | My Little Smilemakers Story by Maaike Boot

When I was little, i only had one hobby: drawing. My mum used to buy me a new package of pencils every week because i run out of ink that crazy quickly. As long as i can remember i was busy creating things. My parents always knew i would be doing something with that creativity.

This spring i was invited to dinner by a Shutterstock representative and i was informed about the Shutterstock Stories program. Shutterstock has been very important to me during the seven year I work for them as a contributer. I think it is partly because of them I was able, and dared, to quit my job and start my own Little Smilemakers Studio. As an ambassador i just had to join in and send my little story into the world.

I love creating things but filming... as it turns out i do not have a a lot of potential as an actress, just being myself and telling my story was too hard for me to do on camera. I kept forgetting my own text. Strange, because it was my text, my story. Well, I needed to come up with a different approach. More me, not in in the spotlight and all about drawing. A dear friend and awesome photographer, Jaap Vork, helped me to make it more 'me.'Hope you can appreciate the video. It is kind of scary to put something out there that is clearly not my media but is very personal. But it's there, all finished!
