Pride designs - Queer inspired designs / Free for Commercial usages

Did you know our pride designs are free to use commercially? We make new designs around pride month each year. And all designs are available for licensing, completely free for commercial and personal use. We believe in supporting the causes that matter.

I grew up with a brother that was 11 years older and he loved dressing his full size Barbie doll (yup, me!). So it didn’t come as a surprise when he brought home a boyfriend. Growing up in a small town being gay was just not very accepted. My brother already moved to a city where obviously there’s a lot more diversity. But I was stuck on a school that was not very accepting of my ‘family’s choices.’ I loved my brother and thought it was the strangest thing that people would come up to me and spit in my face because they heard my brother was living with a man. So I was a lesbian then right? Oh those ignorant people. I met a lot of them.

When I travel I also visit places where this kind of LGBTQ+ diversity is hidden. Or just completely criminalized. I do visit these places because I think it’s good to open a conversation. I actually discuss my brother often when we’re talking to strangers abroad. They first meet me, I’m pretty all right, so they enter the conversation with an open mind. An invitation to talk openly.

This month we licensed some Pride designs to our dear customer Angela who’s the force behind The Fashion for Kids. She’ll be offering our designs on fabric and if you’re EU based you can order a piece on her website. We believe in making the world more colorful and fun. More inclusive and kind. And that means everyone’s welcome. If you resonate with our story. Please get in touch. We love working together with the warm hearted and like-open-minded.

I believe those small nudges matter. Talking about it, anywhere, matters. You want to meet half-way right? In order to see things from another perspective, you have to step out of your own comfort zone. And my experience is it’s not that filled with hate as we try to teach people. It’s just the lack of diversity growing up in a society where this kind of freedom just isn’t common that causes an unsafe atmosphere. So that’s why I don’t ban certain places from my travel list. I might agree, disagree, but it’s about connection. And you can do that with anyone as long as you’re open to it.

We live in a country that puts individuality above everything. Which I think isn’t the holy grail at all. We can’t live without each other. So I can understand why one of my friends accepted himself fully, but chose to live as a cis man with a women and kids. His culture & tradition’s wired like that. You choose the greater good: family above everything. And so everyone has a story. Hopefully our prints will trigger those conversations. We don’t fight for what’s right, but just kill ‘m with kindness. Open your eyes for all that diversity.

Most of the designs shown her and on our socials too are available for licensing. That means you can pay a fee and in return we will send you the original files which you can use for your own production. This covers commercial usage too. Want some more info about licensing and costs involved? You can find more info about our rates on the website. We have a lot more queer inspired designs available. Just shoot us a message if you'd like to browse our full portfolio.

These designs are now available for licensing. And we also have some of these designs available on fabric & wallpaper through our partners at Carriage House Printery & Spoonflower.

The Lookbook: The Monochromes - New Trends Fabric Collection & Surface Designs

Still going stong: Neutrals are taking over from gender specific themes and colors. What could be better than adding some monochromes to your collection? Print designs can set the tone and make or break an interior. Using Monochromes is a great way to mix and match patterns without getting too overwhelmed by color.

We created this collection a while back when we were going over our portfolio and realised we have so many girly prints! It was just a little off balance. So we added some cool novelty prints and minimals to our collections and created some fun black and whites with a hint of beige or gray here and there. What do you think? A little different then our usual batch of surface designs right? These prints make perfect nursery bedding, fun kids wear and mix and match Novelty with minimal and dare to play around.

Wanna license print designs for your business? Please send us a message. We’ve also put some more info about licensing on our blog earlier this year, so if you’d like to read more about that and check out if licensing could be something for you read the blog post. We made an easy step-by-step about what you need to keep in mind before licensing print designs. Any questions? We’re happy to help. Just reach out!

Wanna be kept in the loop and get exclusive designs right into your mailbox? Sign up for our newsletter and stay up to date. You’ll get all new print designs right into your inbox. And of course, we’ll keep you informed about what we’re working on.

About being a Designer: A Creative Business Decade in review

So as we’re wrapping up for the holidays and getting close to the end of a busy and productive year we are reflecting on all projects we’ve worked on. All new collabs we started and things we created. And with the end of the year coming close, so is a decade coming to an end. A great reason to take a moment and look back of ten years of being a creative professional.

It was in 2011 when I started Little Smilemakers Studio. So you can imagine a lot has happened business-wise these past ten years. Ten years ago I was still working for a design agency in my hometown, which has a lot of prestigious design agencies by the way. My city is famous for its graphic design Academy, which I also attended, and prize-winning designers. (yeah I did win a grant once) But I was still working for a boss back then and the graphic design industry was stresses with the bad economy print production was nothing like it used to be. I worked at design agencies before but 10 years back I worked for a company that specialized in back-to-school products, which is an annual thing here in The Netherlands: kids picking out their new school gear: backpacks, notebooks, pencils and everything needed for a new school year. It was during the job I started making print designs for these products. Budgets were tight, but I didn’t want to buy off stock and miss out on the creative part. So I created illustrations and prints at night and started my own stock library.

The step towards being a girlboss
Setting up my stock portfolio was the foundation of my next step towards being an independent designer. I already had a base-income. And making surface pattern designs for stock was a big blue ocean back then. There was no apple print: so I made an apple print. There was no elephant design, so I made an elephant design. These old print designs are still selling to businesses all over the world today. They became the first stock-available surface pattern designs.
But my creations were vulnerable too. The original vectors were easy to download just for a few bucks and there was little protection for the designs available on stock. Many designs were used commercially but never payed for properly.

The signature collection
When I started the studio in 2011, it was time to focus more on my business to business approach. My business started to grow rapidly. Since I was filling up that blue ocean with my print designs everyone knew how to find me and I never had to look for work. Since then it’s been such a fun ride. I’ve been collaborating with new business owners, guiding them through the process of finding their visual voice with logo design, branding and print designs. We’ve created trend reports; there are so many businesses we work with that just don’t know what’s going on on the market trend-wise. We love being guidance for our clients that have no idea where to start when it comes to design & their company.
For the past ten years we've worked for some amazing clients. One of my fave must be a collection I created for one of my favorite retailers on the market in Belgium. Did I mention I studied in Belgium? This was THE place for accessorizing: and I was approached to create a new fall collection of women’s accessories, home wear, textiles and sewing supplies. I loved how this collection turned out.

A little behind the scenes
I also got to attend lots of fair trade shows, and talks. Did a bunch of interviews and videos. Some were fun. Some totally embarrassing, since I am not much of a public speaker. In one of the interviews, I was asked what inspired creating a new collection. I talked about seed. A lot. For a long time. Not good! FYI seed in Dutch means ‘sperm’. So yeah. I talked about sperm. So that was a nope.

Maturing the business
But having a laugh is part of being a designer. Most work turns into ‘could have done better than that!’ after 5 years, into ‘how did I ever make that?’ after 10 years. New skills, trends, and inner work (the biggest reason) are all influencing creation. For me the past 10 years have been an ongoing path to growth both professionally and personally. This has also led me to take things to the next level with the business. Finding a new space, taking on clients that match our vision and values. I can proudly say our studio has matured. I have some amazing colleagues who help me with the not so creative stuff, so I can focus on designing more instead of sending out mailings and doing numbers.
So I am so happy and humble and love where we are now. These 10 years have been such a blessing. So many steps closer to what feels good. So many opportunities. Awesome collabs and lovely people. And I am so looking forward to what is to come.

What is to come
As of next year, I’ll be moving to another city. That means moving the studio. First I’ll be settling into a new place and then take the next step towards finding a new space for the studio. Exciting things to come! Now it’s back to work. Make some cute print designs for nursery textiles. Thank you so much for your time supporting me and my company! And we wish you Happy Holidays.

New designs available // License our surface designs // Abstract Beauty

Did you know we create new designs every week? We update our fabric library almost every week and add new designs and color versions frequently. But for over 8 years we’ve been licensing our surface designs to companies all over the world too. Did you know our designs are not only available on fabric and wallpaper but they are also available for licensing?

When we create print designs we can create custom, exclusive work for our clients, but we also license our designs for non-exclusive use. Because we do understand exclusive print designs can be a little too pricy if you are just starting out with your small business. Most of our clients start our licensing surface patterns that are non-exclusive. They are a great solution for those of you who are dealing with a tight budget. We can create new colors, tweak details to make them more unique to the brand so they are a little different from the prints available on Spoonflower. We understand how competitive the market can be, so even though you license our print designs non-exclusively; we avoid licensing to similar branches. So you can use affordable designs that are as unique as possible to your brand and you don’t have to spend a lot of money doing so.

Every week we create new print designs. This week we wanted to show you some of our Abstract Beauty designs that are available on fabric and wallpaper in our Spoonflower shop. But also available to license directly for your brand.

We’ve worked for small starting businesses and big fish with stores all over the globe, so don’t be shy, I bet we can offer you something that works for you too. So if you see something you like, here on the blog, or over at Spoonflower. Please reach out and send us a message and we’ll tell you all about licensing our surface designs.

The Lookbook: Play Pop - New Trends Fabric Collection

This collection was inspired by our new ways of communicating. Back in the day, I worked on many picto & emoji projects. I studied typography so communication via minimal shapes was definitely ma thing. Nowadays basic illustrative language is incorporated into our every day. We send out hearts and smiles to our friends to express ourselves. And this collection is inspired by just that.

Connecting and expressing. Simple shapes and easy to read illustrations form the base of this collection. On-trend palettes, minimal illustrative designs, with minimal type designs for a fun mix. The Play Pop collection is now available for licensing, both exclusively or non-exclusively. We just released our latest batch of print designs and all of these new prints are now available to either license as a collection or you can license single prints if there’s just one that catches your eye.
We also take on commissions. If you’d like a custom type design or need some specific picto style print that meets your product just reach out. We’re happy to chat about all possibilities.

The Lookbook: Boys Fantasy - New Trends Fabric Collection & Art Licensing

Every year we make over a thousand new pattern designs and we noticed there is a mayor dis-balance when it comes to girl vs boy prints. The majority of licensed designs are Gender neutrals and more girly print designs. 70% of all our designs are girly prints and licensed for kids fashion and accessories and baby nursery textiles and home decor.

Since there is so much demand for girls, we realized it was about time to add some cool boy prints to our collection. We realized we needed to upgrade our selection of boy prints and wanted to show you this new collection of designs. Perfect for kids swimwear, fashion items, and fabric. And we’d love to see them in those tiny human bedrooms too. Those palm leaves make a great wallpaper, right?

This collection was sent out as an exclusive set of designs are is now available to license both exclusively or non-exclusively. We just released our latest print designs are all of these are now available to either license as a collection or you can license single prints if there’s just one that catches your eye. The Lookbook: Raw Minimal Animals - New Trends Fabric Collection & Art Licensing

For our quarterly exclusive mailing, we sent our 6 brand new designs collections. We wanted to put a spotlight on our new Raw Minimal collection which was inspired by the raw organic texture in nature. We’ve created a collection that contains 4 abstract animals prints.

We’ve used current color palettes, we combined bright color pops and muted tones to create a one-of-a-kind free shape pattern. How to license artwork for your business // 5 tips for licensing print designs for your products

It's always fun to see our products in shops at large retailers nationwide. But the most fulfilling collabs are always the ones where we get to work together with mompreneurs and small business owners. The pay is not only in cash but it’s also emotionally fulfilling seeing how those small start-up businesses flourish.

First, they find our prints over at our Spoonflower shop, where we have over 6000 designs on fabric and wallpaper available. The plus of starting like this is that it’s easy to create a sense of style and signature in the use of patterns. It is low cost and it’s an easy way to test target groups using fabric instead of licensing designs right away.

But we see numerous small crafters grow their online shops, and then exclusivity becomes more important. We don’t like copy cats either and it’s hard to always stay ahead and be taken seriously when your competition is copying every step you take. Trust me we’ve had a fair share of copied designs our there. It’s easy to recognize since the details in prints and composition overlap. Sadly this is a problem in every business. So working on exclusive designs is more in demand than ever.

As a Spoonflower customer, it might be scary to take the next step to license designs. We have an easy non-exclusive license structure, and we love making exclusive work and tweak our rates a little to support small business owners. So it’s a soft landing. Most of our smalle business collabs come from places like Spoonflower. So we appreciate each and every one of you that takes that step. It takes balls to invest in your business. I’ve been there.

Working with small companies we love most. And yes we’ve worked with numerous companies all around the globe, big fish I call them. It is never as personal, never as satisfying and also, we try to check their production ethics, but it is not as transparent and direct as working with that mom, sewing baby nest and working from her living room. It is lovely to see the direct impact. And of course, it works both ways. Here are 5 tips and things to consider before licensing designs for your business and products.

1 // What's your visual style?
If you are looking for a specific style, do some research and make yourself some mood boards to help you figure out what kind of prints you love most. Are they hand-drawings, a little quirky? Do you love minimals or abstracts or are you more the romantic kind of customer: soft and flowy watercolors might be more suitable for you.

2 // How important is exclusivity for your business?
If you license print designs at our studio we have over 10.000 designs to choose from. And even though we license our designs mostly non-exclusively, we avoid licensing to competing companies. So if you are on a budget this is a pretty good solution. We also create custom designs. If you are starting your own business this can be a little too pricey. But keep in mind, if you spend a little more time and money on a coherent collection, your customers will bond with you. If you have a coherent style you'll create loyal customers who choose your products because they can rely on a steady print signature. If your products carry prints that are driving sales, make sure you make print designs a priority.

3 // Did you do your market research?
Some of our customers do extended research on their target group. Others just handpick prints without any further background info or research on their market. If you would like to implement print designs to your product that speak to your ideal customer, we can help you set up a proper template. What works, what to avoid. What colors might be perfect now, or should be released later. Is your product seasonal? Keep in mind that you don't have to compete. You bring something new to the table here, so don't be insecure if you are doing things a little different than your competition. That's the exact thing that makes your product valuable.

4 // Are you ready for licensing?
Our license fee is pretty affordable, but if you are insecure about what print designs to purchase and you are making fabric items we always advise to use Spoonflower fabric first. Once you get started and get some info about what works best for your customers and what works best for you, you can dive in a little deeper and license designs. if you need any assistance, any tips about trends, colors, etc. we're here to help!

5 // Are you ready to run a transparent and honest business and leave the competition behind?
I've stumbled upon a rat or two in the years I've been running the studio. Big corporations trying to steal our artwork. Fabric suppliers that are certified but use subcontractors to cut costs and don't meet certification standards. Companies stealing our print ideas and themes by bribing production companies. But also start-ups who only copy others and ask us to copy designs for them. Oh hell no! The biggest mistake you can make is fooling your customer. We love working with honest humans, my business is personal so collabs are very personal. Be transparent about your process. I know our customers trust us because they understand there are no tricks involved. I started the studio, not in for the money, but for the simple reason that creating is in my bones. So we'd love to collab with honest peeps, who value this process, have a conscious mindset and love to share the love by giving us credit for what we do. Are you ready to open up? New designs available // License our surface designs // Retro Splash Abstracts

This week we wanted to show you some of our abstracts that are available on fabric and wallpaper in our Spoonflower shop.

Made with Little Smilemakers Studio Fabric // Top 5 March 2019

It is so exciting to see a finished project after working hard on a new collection of design or a series of illustrations for our clients. But with finished fabric designs it is even a bigger surprise to see what customers create. To see how final products evolve when people put their own creative energy in there is amazing.

If you browse around on Etsy or Instagram for some kids fashion you are very likely to stumble upon some Little Smilemakers prints. Most creatives that use our fabrics have small home-based businesses sell their projects via the internet and tag us via Instagram. But there are also some bigger fish out they're using our Spoonflower designs for their business. So we see some amazing things pop up in our feed every month. We love how Little Smilemakers creations are the foundation for other creatives all around the world to work with. So here is our monthly blog post that features some creative results from Latvia, Poland, the States, and France. This month we selected a whole bunch of favorite fabrics turned into the most gorgeous items. Kids fashion, nursery accessories and home and interior decoration, so much to choose from! We have selected a cool cute abstract romper, some on-trend kids bedding and some other fashion items you’re going to love! Take a look and see if there is something for your little one too. Have a look and enjoy our April selection.

1 // Wuf Kids // Baby Teethers & Fashion Accessories
This Latvian shop has some cool things to offer. We love their range of leggings and we adore their fun little hedgehog fabric teethers. So clever! But they have lot’s more cute things to choose from. And lot’s of Little Smilemakers designs! Triangles, flamingo’s, teepees, ice cream cones, grizzly bears, and our minty feathers of course. I bet we forgot to mention some other designs but take a look at their Facebook page and see them all!

2 // Milutka // Bedding & outdoor accessories
Milutka is a company specialized in kids cottons. From soft winter hats to mommy hand warmers, pillows, soft toys and stroller gear, if you'd like to have one print for your entire nursery and kids outdoor gear go visit their online shop. They have our cute little raccoon cactus print in their collection but also our colorful pirates, elephants, squirrels, dachshund puppy, plus sign and owl prints. And last but not least: They have a great selection of kids bedding in all those prints mentioned above. Take a look!

3 // Woodbean // Baby Rompers
If you are looking for some unique snuggle wear for your little one this shop is the place to be. Lisa, who is based in Minnesota, creates the most wonderful soft pieces for your little one and we love her style of mixing and matching prints and uni’s. Her style is like no other and we wanted to share one of her custom made orders with you for which she has used our Abstract Bubble design. These soft little rompers are just to die for. We love how Lisa mixed the print with the contrasting earth tones. Check out her Etsy shop where you can see her wonderful collection in a series of beautiful, soft photography. Check out all her wonderful handmade creations.

4 // Pistol & Arrow // Leotards
We just adore the ice cream leotard made by Brittany Kleiss who runs her small Pistol & Arrow Etsy shop from Fair Oaks. The ice cream print has been around for a while but we found this adorable baby girl in her leo a few weeks ago. Since we have a little bit of a girly theme this month this webshop is def worth a visit. She has some adorable items for your little girl. So go take a look.

5 // Ty Mom Studio // Kids Fashion
Charlene is based in Paris and has a great eye for thinking in collections. Her fabric choices have a steady ‘feel.’ She has a fun collection of on-trend gender neutral fabrics and she is working on a big collection for her webshop launch. Even though her webshop is not quite open yet, we wanted to share some of her cute pineapple and cacti leggings and those gender neutral rompers with you. For now, you will have to try and have a little more patience until she opens up her shop you can follow her on Instagram. I already have my eye on these cool cacti leggings.
