Made with Little Smilemakers Studio Fabric // Top 3 black and white designs // October 2019

We love to see a finished project after working hard on a new collection of design or a series of illustrations for our clients. But with finished fabric designs it is even a bigger surprise to see what customers create. To see how final products evolve when people put their own creative energy in there is amazing.

If you browse around on Etsy or Instagram for some kids fashion or home decoration you are very likely to stumble upon some Little Smilemakers prints. Most creatives with small home based businesses sell their projects via internet and tag us via Instagram. So we see some amazing things pop up in our feed every month. We love how Little Smilemakers creations are the foundation for other creatives all around the world to work with. So here is our monthly blog post that features some creative results from around the world. We have some cute pineapple bloomers, ice cream leggings and of course our top seller: our black and white cactus fabric in watercolors. This is our top 3 selection for October.

Itty Bitty Kawaii Ice Cream leggings
Itty Bitty Leggings has been one of our most loyal customers. Monica is one of our frequent Spoonflower customers, she has a range of Little Smilemakers designs up in her shop every season. She makes wonderful leggings from her Salt Lake City home while she raises her two sons. This shop is perfect if you have some gentlemen to dress. Because she has a fun range of cool boys stuff in there. For this months post we selected our black and white ice cream kawaii fabric. One of our most popular prints this year. Monochrome fabric is trending! Suitable for both boys and girls. She also has some other gender neutral Little Smilemakers designs and more girly items too. They're lovely! With her fun stylish eye her collection is always on trend. Go take a look!

Lulu & Gunner cactus joggings
Our watercolors cactus fabric must be one of our favorite fabric designs this year. We were so thrilled to see Becca’s creation pop up in our Instagram feed. With a great passion for sewing she created fresh and fun kids apparel, tops, bottoms, one pieces and accessories are available in her shop. Becca named her online boutique after her son and daughter and on her website you can see some adorable photo’s of her precious family. We really love to give this lady a little shout out. Shop these cactus bottoms or one of our other prints in her online shop!

Sparkles ’n Studs bloomers
Gaby is a mother of 5 and started making kids accessories as a hobby. This hobby quickly turned into a business and she now creates all kinds of cute items for your little one. Rompers, leggings and headbands can be found in her shop. We loved these adorable bloomers made with our pineapple fabric. She has some other black and white picks in her Etsy shop too. So take a look if you are looking for some cool gender neutral items!

Sources of inspiration: Recharge // Getting back to nature

April has been a good month, travel wise. Just before moving the studio we decided to take a little break and travel. We visit Spain and Italy and came back recharged and full of inspiration.

As a designer I need to create my own bubble in order to make new work. But too much solitude also blocks creativity. Spring time is an amazing time of the year to get out more, see the leaves grow, trees turn green, flowers blossom. Such an inspirational time of the year. As you can imagine lot’s of nature inspired surface patterns will be in the making.

This year I booked two short trips to Spain, Siurana: a lush area, popular for climbing and hiking. I had a little peek into the world of rock climbing there. And I already signed up for a bouldering introduction course back home. Being outside all day, under the trees, watching the landscapes change, the dramatic mountains, the soft warm breeze. Living in a city is pretty challenging sometimes, the chaotic streets, so many people, cars, noise. So a 5 day all day green experience was an amazing way to recharge, absorb some sunlight to return home with some refreshed energy.

After Spain I travelled to the Amalfi coast. Nature has so much to offer. I love the dramatic rocks, the contrasting bright color of the water. The Amalfi coast is truly mesmerizing. But of course traveling to Italy means awesome food! I love being in the woods and enjoy being outside but I do love a little culture too. Italy will always be one of my fave European countries to visit.

Now we’re all back in the studio and also renovating the new studio space where we will be moving into within the next two weeks. Curious about the space and how we are turning it around into a new creative business office? Check @littlesmilemakers stories on Insta to get a little peek into what we are doing.

Sources of inspiration: London // Food, art and shopping // Top 5 things to see and do in this bustling city

The last time I visit London must have been around 9 years ago when I was meeting up with a friend that moved to the UK. I haven’t been back ever since, so many places to see and so many new cities I haven’t been yet. This year i decided it was about time to rediscover this fun metropolis.

As you might know, I live in The Netherlands, from here it is only a 40 minutes flight to London, traveling to my nephew in the south of The Netherlands takes me more time. But of course there are so many places to discover on this earth going back to London was not really on my list, even though I loved it every since my first visit, when I was sixteen London was my first destination to travel to all by myself. I love experiencing the freedom, see all neighborhoods and it’s subcultures, art and live music.

I got to make two trips to London in a row this year, and I finally had some time to rediscover the city last week when I decided to stick around for a little longer. Go check out the Hockney exhibit and soak up the creative energy. And whenever I make a trip a little tip 5 follows. Here is my top 5 of things to see and do in this amazing always buzzing capital of Britain.

1 // Transportation
Ride the Tube, take the bus and travel over water. Ok this might sound a little nutty, but if you visit London make sure to use public transportation. It shows you London’s diversity and gives you a little taste of the buzzing city life. Take the underground going from A to B. I love traveling with the tube, seeing the different stations, architecture, tiles, signage. Traveling on the deck of the buss gives you a lovely view over the busy London streets and taking a boat will give you a sense of freedom. Watching people go on and off and while you visit different neighborhoods the people change too. London is a colorful place with so many subcultures and fashion styles. So use public transportation, I would usually recommend a walk, but London is huge and it is definitely worth the experience if you are not used to living in a city.

2 // Brick Lane
Whether you like shopping or not spend you Sunday in the East of London. Take the tube to Liverpool Street or Aldgate East and visit the brick Lane market full of fun unique fashion and accessories. I am not a big fan of shopping myself but love to see unique creations and I love the atmosphere of this place. Brick Lane is famous for it’s market, vintage stuff, but there is so much more to do and see. I love spotting street art. And this place is heaven for people like me. Amazing pieces of art cover building facades form top to bottom. Huge pieces of art. Stencil art, spay painted animals and portraits, stickering, you name it. This is street art at it’s best and around every corner you can spot beautiful gems, pieces of art. If you walk up North you reach Shoreditch, another up and coming neighborhood filled with graffiti murals. Done sightseeing? Sit your ass down at Spitalfields market and grab some food or have a beer at the Old Truman Brewery. Enjoy your day!

3 // Tate Modern
All right, this may not come as a surprise. Of course my number one place would be the Tate. Even though I got to see the Hockney exhibit in Tate Britain I have to say whatever happens I just love Tate Modern, go when you have the chance. The building itself is magnificent from the outside, and an adventure from the inside. This former Bankside’s power station has been turned into one of the the worlds most amazing art galleries. This very spacious and industrial building is perfect for large scale art pieces. Quite recently the museum expanded with a brand new wing, the tanks and the switch house, go up to the bar and from here you have an amazing view over the Thames and the city of London. Get a proper coffee, grab some lunch and enjoy the breathtaking view. But, enough about the building itself. Tate Modern might be my number one art museum and it is not because of the building itself. The permanent collection of contemporary art is free of admission charge, you can find pieces by Klee, Lichtenstein, Mondriaan and Warhol. Sculptures, paintings, video’s. The permanent collection itself is worth a visit. But don’t forget to check out the temporary exhibits as well. I spend a good two days here. So if you visit London on a rainy day and need some inspiration, fuel up on some art and go visit Tate Modern.

4 // Pot roast & Beer
The food. I always chat a little about food. I remember London having a bad name what it comes to food. But a lot has changed over the years and there is so much to choose from besides the traditional pot roast, eggs and beans, and fish and chips. There are some amazing places to have food, like the peep show my friend took me to that turned out to be a Mexican restaurant. And a good one!
What I also like about London is the beer culture, I love beer, a proper one, and there are a lot of breweries where you can find some local draft beer.

If you are a foodie go visit the Borough Market, you can grab a quick bite for lunch or shop for some whole foods or fresh flowers. Have a quick snack or taste some imported olive oil. I love the raw atmosphere while wandering around the place. The market is located under the railway track and is a dramatic place of brick and metal. The market consists of more than a hundred food stalls with a range of fresh products like fish, cheese, meat, veggies and baked goods. The Borough market used to be a wholesale market for local groceries in the city and has been around for centuries. It is one of the oldest and largest food markets in London.

5 // Camden Town
There is so much to do all around London. But there is one thing I love: see some live music. One place that will be stuck with me is The Monarch in Camden Town. Back in the day I was a little rock chick, do you remember those metal beads necklaces? I think I even bought one back in the day when I visit London for the first time and came to Camden Town. Anyway, if you like to see some live music; this is the place where metal is alive and kicking’. Every Sunday there is a live performance with some proper metal and rock music. Guns ’s Roses, Iron Maiden. It is all part of the weekly playlist. Camden Town is a great place to wander around and spot some street art, do some shopping. I still like this neighborhood, it is like time stood still here.

Sources of inspiration: Getting exposed // An artist sketch book

I love designers sketch books. But I am always a little intimidated when artists are willing to open up their sketch books and show them to the world. To me a sketch is a very personal, and sometimes emotional even, piece of myself so the thought of someone grabbing my sketch book and take a look and wander through the pages feels like someone is reading my personal diary. But I have a visual profession so sharing my work, also my sketches and research is also part of the deal.

I try to take a moment each day to sit down with a piece of paper and draw. It is something I have been doing ever since I could hold a pencil (I did have a little break as a teen though) and even when I am traveling I carry a tiny little notebook for small 'visual notes.' But you will never see me draw in public, while drawing I feel exposed and I rather be making illustrations at home with a cup of coffee next to me. While I was in Art School I remember painting classes, where we had to sit down and paint for three hours straight. Those were impossible!

To sit down and draw I have to find some peace and quiet first. I do sketch almost every day, but to sit down and create an entire collection of new designs I have to feel completely in the zone. Depending on my mood I use ink or paint to sketch. Usually at night, when I sit down and sketch while watching a movie or documentary I use a micron pen. The best solution for creating and bad lighting. Even the weirdest sketches can turn out to be a fabric design or part of a new collection. They can be abstracts or every day items. Little moments of life. Anything can be a source of inspiration and part of my sketching ritual.

When I decide to share some sketches they are usually in the last stage of a process, when they are almost ready to go digital. These are usually the ink drawings I share via Instagram of via our Little Smilemakers Facebook page. Maybe one day I will have the guts to post an overview of the ones that did not make the final cut. The first drawings and sketches I messed up before I got to a point where I thought they were more easy on the eyes. I wonder if I will have the guts. But here are some sketches. The foundaton of many designs that are eventually used for fabric and home decoration. Hope you enjoy them! If you are curious about my workflow follow #littlesmilemakers on Instagram.

Sinterklaas // Dutch Holiday season start // Kleurplaat & Kijkdoos

So yes, for non-Dutchies this might be a little bit of a strange post. Each year we celebrate Sinterklaas the first week of December. It is quite similar to the well know Santa tradition but our old white bearded man comes from a typical Dutch heritage. He arrives on a boat with a dozen of helpers and turn the dark November month into a sweet candy filled mayhem.

Each year we try to create a cool freebie around this traditional Dutch holiday. This year we have a fun project to work on. A Sinterklaas and Zwarte Pier themed set of drawings your kids can color, cut and paste into their Sinterklaas paper Peepshow. Click on the image and save the file to your desktop. Don't forget to send us your results!

This crafting set was originally made around 10 years ago for H&M Holland when I was still working for a design company that was hired to do H&M's graphic design in The Netherlands.

> Jimi Hendrix | Music icon wallpaper & fabric | hand drawn art | surface pattern design

As a fan of music I must adore this man. I love Jimi Hendrix. I have been stroling around shops and the internet to find a nice print to make a t-shirt of this guitar playing icon. But no luck. So a while ago I started making a large portrait drawing. Not thinking this would end up on fabric. But as you might already know. I can make a cute pattern out of almost every shape or form so, yes... I decided it was about time to add this pattern to my new fabric collection. The large portrait and print are also available for your couch on a cute throw pillow. But, for real Jimi Hendrix fans, the patterned print will also be available on wallpaper. What? Yes, wallpaper! I love this job!

> Wild life illustration series | inspired by National Parks and travels world wide

One of my biggest passions is travel. I love to see things I have never seen before and I adore different cultures and countries. My work is highly inspired by my travels. This summer I have traveled through Asia. Visiting National Parks in India, Indonesia and Nepal inspired me to do a series of wild life illustrations.

These screen print illustrations are available on fabric and wallpaper at the Spoonflower shop, uploaded to the Shutterstock portfolio and added to the list of prints, tank tops, tote bags, laptop covers and iphone cases (for new iPhone5S and iphone5C cases as well) Society6 shop. So hopefully you will enjoy my little pieces of travel as well.

> A little inspirational video | Behind the scenes at Little Smilemakers Studio | Drawing on camera

For the Shutterstock Stories entry I have made several shots that did not make the final cut. But what to do with all this material. I do not like clutter on my computer so it was either throwing all these pieces of film out or do something with it. I decided to upload them as a little source of inspiration. Hopefully these short clips can inspire you to start drawing as well. Enjoy and feel free to leave a comment.

During the final december episode from the How I Met Your Mother series there was a sudden glance of what seemed to be a Little Smilemakers design. Have you ever seen the 'coca cola' flash movie? Where they hide a crazy short cut of the logo and then you suddenly want to have a good Cuba Libre? Well, it took a while for me to realize why i found her iphone case so familiar. You can see How I Met Your Mothers actress Alyson Hannigan making a Little Smilemakers phonecall to Jason Segel.
