New designs available // License our surface designs // Abstract Beauty

Did you know we create new designs every week? We update our fabric library almost every week and add new designs and color versions frequently. But for over 8 years we’ve been licensing our surface designs to companies all over the world too. Did you know our designs are not only available on fabric and wallpaper but they are also available for licensing?

When we create print designs we can create custom, exclusive work for our clients, but we also license our designs for non-exclusive use. Because we do understand exclusive print designs can be a little too pricy if you are just starting out with your small business. Most of our clients start our licensing surface patterns that are non-exclusive. They are a great solution for those of you who are dealing with a tight budget. We can create new colors, tweak details to make them more unique to the brand so they are a little different from the prints available on Spoonflower. We understand how competitive the market can be, so even though you license our print designs non-exclusively; we avoid licensing to similar branches. So you can use affordable designs that are as unique as possible to your brand and you don’t have to spend a lot of money doing so.

Every week we create new print designs. This week we wanted to show you some of our Abstract Beauty designs that are available on fabric and wallpaper in our Spoonflower shop. But also available to license directly for your brand.

We’ve worked for small starting businesses and big fish with stores all over the globe, so don’t be shy, I bet we can offer you something that works for you too. So if you see something you like, here on the blog, or over at Spoonflower. Please reach out and send us a message and we’ll tell you all about licensing our surface designs.

Made with Little Smilemakers Studio Fabric // Handmade faves // June 2017

It is so exciting to see a finished project after working hard on a new collection of design or a series of illustrations for our clients. But with finished fabric designs it is even a bigger surprise to see what customers create. To see how final products evolve when people put their own creative energy in there is amazing.

If you browse around on Etsy or Instagram for some kids fashion or home decoration you are very likely to stumble upon some Little Smilemakers prints. Most creatives with small home based businesses sell their projects via internet and tag us via Instagram. So we see some amazing things pop up in our feed every month. We love how Little Smilemakers creations are the foundation for other creatives all around the world to work with. So here is our monthly blog post that features some world wide creations from Canada, New Zealand, The Netherlands and the US. This month we selected a whole bunch of clean Scandinavian themed designs, turned into the most gorgeous items. Kids fashion, nursery accessories and have you seen those cute cuddle cloths? There was so much to choose from! We have selected some cute lions that make a perfect gender neutral baby shower gift, leggings, bibs and pillows. Take a look and see if there is something for your little one too. This is our June selection.

Rosa Deco
This Dutch shop has a wonderful collection of new born accessories all handmade by Sabine, shop owner and passionate sewer. These fun gift boxes make perfect gifts for a mom to be or the conscious mommy who is looking for organic pieces for their little one. Teething rings, baby cloths, take a look into her shop and check out her fresh style.

Wild Littles
This shop creates modern handmade quilts & bedding for teeny tiny humans. Designed and handmade in beautiful Victoria, BC, each quilt is professionally designed, pieced and free-motion quilted. The very nature of being individually crafted by hand means that there will be slight variations and no two quilts are the same. The quilts make a wonderful, thoughtful gift for an expectant or new mom and are perfect to drape over the side of a crib and easily transition to toddler bedding. Plus they can be used as a play mat for the floor or tummy time, spread out for a picnic or for cuddling and snuggling. These baby quilts are designed to stand the test of time and are sure to be a favorite heirloom to last for many years to come. Go check out the shop!

Bean Sprout
Bean Sprout must be one of our favorite webshops using our Spoonflower fabric. Hiedee has a great eye for unique and bespoke designs and we love her style and gorgeous clean photography. Bean Sprout has a pretty big collection of Little Smilemakers fabrics, all turned into the most adorable baby and kids fashion accessories like baby bibs, book bags, summer hats and nappy wallets. For this months post we selected our abstract rain drops print that was turned into a cool boy bib. Wanna see more? Take a look into her gorgeous shop for all wonderful handmade creations.

Itty Bitty Leggings
Monica is one of our frequent Spoonflower customers, she has a range of Little Smilemakers designs up in her shop every season. She makes wonderful leggings from her Salt Lake City home while she raises her two sons. This shop is perfect if you have some gentlemen to dress. Because she has a fun range of cool boys stuff in there. For this months post we selected out abstract grid fabric. One of our most popular prints this year. Monochrome fabric is trending right now! She also has some gender neutrals and more girly items too. They're lovely! With her fun stylish eye her collection is always on trend. Go take a look!

Woohoo! // Yay! // Celebrating 5 years of Little Smilemakers fabric on Spoonflower

This year we are celebrating our fifth anniversary this year over at Spoonflower. We opened up our Spoonflower shop back in 2012 when Spoonflower was only a new bee in the digital on demand printing business. There was so much to do and so many themes were not covered yet. We started making designs just for Spoonflower since the fabric industry was pretty old school and it was hard to find some colorful, fun and on trend designs. And while we were licensing to fabric printers, the designs they would pick were not really our own faves. We had so much stuff we wanted to put on fabric!

A great platform for Artists
For us working with Spoonflower was a great step of getting back in controle of our designs. We had been selling our prints over at Shutterstock but there was more and more misuse. Fabric popping up with our designs everywhere, but without paying for the proper license. It was way to easy to get your hands on the original vector files and do whatever. With Spoonflower we felt our designs were safe, our files were never shared with third parties and this way we could rely on the fact we would be properly compensated for each and every sale. In the beginning sales were pretty slow but after a year or so our designs got picked up. After starting our with our more colorful prints. Our plus signs, feathers, triangles and other geometric prints became hot sellers and we started to upload more designs ahead of the trend. Our 10 year old pineapple print suddenly took off and was lucky enough to catch the trend wave. If was fun to see how some of our older surface designs were suddenly selling like crazy when the trend kicked in.

Let's print color
Back in those first years, digital printing was all new and exciting for fabric designers, there were no color limitations so we could go nuts on color. Instead of designing fabric in the usual 5 colors we could add watercolors, use a rainbow of colors, shades, anything seemed possible. But of course after that first crazy exciting omg-we-need-more-color rush we toned down our prints a little bit. With a background in graphic design and typography I was looking for a more clean balance. Reducing colors and shapes lead to our very recognizable Scandinavian range. I always loved designing on a crisp white background and we were lucky this trend picked up immediately. Our woodland animals and geometric prints have been going strong ever since and the past two years we have been focussing more on adding more abstracts and raw detailed prints to our shop. Prints we love to see in our homes and fashion ourselves.

Researching & insight
Spoonflower has been a great way to built our portfolio, test the market, monetize our designs, get insight about what works where, since they sell and ship world wide. having that insight is very important. With all that information we know what works where and we can advise and coach our clients in their design signature for their brands. But what we love most of all is to see what our fabric is used for. We see new creations pop up on our Facebook page and Instagram every day and it is so much fun to see people from all over the globe enjoy working around our themes and color schemes. Making wonderful creations, kids fashion and accessories, totes, sports stuff, home decoration, pet accessories, you name it, we’ve seen it and we love it!

Links & Credits
For this post we have used some finished items from our long term supporters. Bean Sprout, Pistol and Arrow, Lucie June Boutique and Hen House Apparel. We just love their beautiful range of products using some of our all time best-sellers: Black and White Hedgehogs, Little Lions, The grid, Pineapple Arrows and of course our fave Bunny design. If you have some cool creations to shop yourself, please send us your finished items!

We’ll keep continuing expanding our portfolio, adding new designs and new color schemes every week. Our portfolio has over 3400 designs up for sale on fabric and wallpaper. Spoonflower has been a great platform for designers and creatives and we are proud to have over 2200 people following our work and with over 138.632 favorites received so far we would like to thank each and every one of our customers who has even ordered one of our designs. Thank you so much for your support and your awesome creations, sweet comments and requests. Let’s continue this journey!

Freshtastic Little Smilemakers Fabric: Memphis Style Abstracts // August selection

Every month we upload new work to our Spoonflower shop and over the past 5 years our portfolio has grown from zero to over 3000 designs to choose from. Behind the scenes we can search within our portfolio but we noticed customers have a hard time finding what they want sometimes. With our monthly Freshtastic Fabric post we feature new fabric that was added to our shop. We include some direct links to these new designs and color versions. Hopefully we can filter on trend designs and make the process of selecting prints a little easier.

For our August post we selected some of our new abstracts. I love making designs with a little raw edge. For these series of designs we used large brushes, ink and paint rollers and turned those abstract spots and strokes into beautiful series for the summer season. Colorful raw Memphis Style inspired abstract fabric designs for cool kids clothes and fun items to color your home. Hopefully you like them as much as I do and we hope to se some finished creations pop up in our feeds.

Lemons
What is your favorite fruit? I personally love all sorts of fruit prints. I have had my cherry fase, some apple years and of course with my wodka fase came the lime. For this summer we have made some fun fruit prints like these lemons to match our memphis Style inspired collection. We made them in three colors that are now also available in different scales: mint, pink and yellow.

Strokes & Circles
The base of these designs are either large brush strokes or circles. Together with these tiny spots and beige rain drop shapes they form a nice matching collection for cool abstract clothes for your kids or fun colorful summer decoration for your interior. Here are the links to these 5 matching prints: Sand Raindrops, White Circles, Black Circles, Sand Strokes, Yellow Strokes.

Summer Rain
All sky related designs have been trending the past year so for our memphis collection we also included some abstract raindrops. We have made them in colorful summer colors, beige blue, pastel pink, blue and pink, and winter color schemes as well. You can mix and match with other prints of this collection, the dot details are similar to other fabric.

Dots
Some new colorful dots are also added to the fabric collection. We have made some fresh summer color schemes to mix and match with these Memphis Series but you can also mix and match then with our summer animals and other abstracts we have made for the warmer season. You can find the link here, from top to bottom: Lilac, Blue, Peach, Black, Yellow, Mint. Hope you like these new additions to the shop!

Finished project: Kalamati // New range of children’s summer bedding and home decoration // Colorful kids home inspiration

The past months we have been working on some new designs for Kalamati, a Polish company specialized in home decoration textiles for kids. We have been working for Kalamati for over two years now and we love how the collection is growing with every season.

Home is where the heart is, so we made some cute little houses. We created some super cool boys items with the iconic London black cab, bedding, blankets, cool cotton bags. Definitely our favorite print this season! But we also made some pastel colored hot air balloons for girls and in gender neutral colors too. An entire fresh range for the warmer season.

And the blankets are not only suitable in your little ones bedroom, you can also use those blankets for a little picknick in the park or day at the beach.

For this new range of bedding we have received some amazing photography we would love to share here on the blog. It is always a surprise to see the finished product with our prints on them and we love sharing these fun photoshoots.

If you would like to get your hands on one of these new items. Go visit the Kalamati webshop and check out all their beautiful items.

Sometimes we see finished products in magazines like Ottobre, Knippie and La Maison Victor and can not trace back to their origin. This cute coat was made by a Veritas customer. And what a great job. If you are the maker of this creation please contact us so we can give you some proper credit for your work.

Unicorn dream girly shorts
We love love love these little tiny shorts that were made by Isis that runs a cute shop with apparel and accessories for baby and toddlers. All items are hand made. Whatever legging, romper of pair of little shorts you pick, your girls will feel like a little princess. Go take a look and browse through her shop or follow her feed on Instagram for some fashionable inspiration for your little one.

Fun storage bags for your home
We are big fans of One Pennie, a little shop from Perth. These cute garlands are made with one of our most popular Spoonflower design: our plus sign fabric. We love the black and white style with a little hint of color here and there. These clever bags to store your pencils or keep your plants safe and pretty are available on their website.

We have already seen a lot of awesome sewing projects made by Little Smilemakers fabric customers. We made a little selection out of the dozen photographs that were sent to us or that we were tagged in. Cute home decor items. Personalized bedding, scarfs, leggings and head bands. So much to choose from! If you'd like to be featured in on of our monthly "made with..." posts. Please send us your images.

Sources of inspiration: Fresh whites // contrasting black and 50 shades of gray // pale nudes and beige.

Little Smilemakers designs usually are colorful prints on a white surface. The past few weeks we have been redecorating the Little Smilemakers Studio office and put up some pale nude powder tone prints. Whites make colors pop and there is no other color that creates a more peaceful environment to work in. I was inspired by numerous visits to art galleries and museums that always present art on clean fresh white walls. But the winter also brings a clean crisp vibe into the office. The powder white snow, the softened sounds absorbed by the thick layer of snow. During the winter I always feel the need to make my surroundings more calm.

After redecoration the studio I felt like holding on to the new calm color scheme of the work place. I decided to make an entire series of designs that would be gender neutral. The prints and patterns that are being sold as gender neutrals are usually based on soft pastel tones of green and yellow. Since I am not a big fan of both colors I decided to make an entire series of with fresh whites contrasting blacks and shades of gray and beige. Little Smilemakers designs usually contain numerous bright colors. It has been a challenge but also very mindful to work with only white, black and shades of earthy tones. Imagine the number of colors that usually are used in the prints. I did not have to worry about a color scheme for a change. It was all reduced to the basics and focus was on the composition and detailing more that on working with a certain color scheme. A relief!

This month I was also arranging a baby shower for one of my best friends and it strikes me that gender neutral prints, wallpapers, home decor items and fabrics are so hard to find since there are enough creative artists working on the theme. I hope with this series of designs there is enough to choose from for decoration your soft neutral nursery.

Reducing colors might be useful in the gender neutral theme but I still love to work with bright strong colors. But if you are looking for more beige and gray tones, we have an entire collection ready to be produced on fabrics. Geometric abstracts, woodland animals, Indian summer themes and many more. So check out the shop. All designs will be added to our collection first week of March so stay tuned!
